Bing. Ray gets it in one.
Important safety tip, either don't end your variables with # or $ or don't use let.
The message is sort of misleading:
(SQR 4000) Result #variable or $variable or '=' missing in expression.
Important safety tip, if you want to use let then don't end variables with # or $.
If only PS hadn't named all these fields page#, line#, transit#, etc etc etc.

Jim,
Very interesting. It appears that the second is rejected by
the compiler. Note that this is also rejected:
let $transit$ = '041001939'
Interestingly, the following is NOT rejected:
let $x = $transit#
