I don't consider this discussion pointless, if that is what you mean
to imply.  Some portion of the traffic of any unmoderated list will
be metadiscussion because metadiscussion is the currency of government,
and unmoderated lists are by definition self-governing.  We largely
police ourselves and don't need the list owner to yell at us that often.

You're right.  It's in the group's best interests to find a solution
to the out-of-office message problem, as it effects everyone who posts.
My posted request for a solution netted a good answer within about ten
minutes.  I have to say I'm pleased with that result. ;)
