what is decode

Hello, SQRUG!

I cannot find any reference to the 'decode' function.  I have an SQR which has the following:

Select
blah blah
>From Table ABC
Where blah blah
And (Months_Between(Sysdate,decode(A.ReHire_Date,A.Null,A.Hire_Dt,ReHire_Dt))) >= 12

I need to know what 'decode' does.

I'm on
Oracle 7
PT 7
SQR 4
