Re: Best Practices

I thought I would wait until all of the messages to this thread were posted to see if it would be worth adding my 2 cents worth. All of the points that were made were extremely meaningful.
One thing that I did learn when I was a newbie SQRer - clone, clone, clone. During my first engagement, I spent a considerable amount of time reviewing and examining the various SQRs and SQCs that were delivered with the ADP HRizon product.
I have also found that testing of the SELECT statements during the coding process is extremely helpful. Basically, I would build the SELECT statement in a text editor such as notepad. There are many tools available to facilitiate that process - my favorites being T.O.A.D. (for Oracle only) and UltraEdit. When the completed SQR is executed, I would also run the SELECT statement and compare the results of the two.
Hope this helps in addition to all the others,
Sam

Just a quick note to say thanks to all the input about this topic. As a
fairly new SQR programmer with no-one else here at work knowing anything
about it, this list has been a valuable resource. This type of discussion
lets me know that some of the practices I've adopted are on the right track,
and you've given me other ideas to better manage the changes here.
Thanks again, and please keep the hints coming...
