performance optimization

OS : HPUX/V????
DB : Oracle/7.3.3
App : PSoft 7.x
Code : none sent

Hey guys,

Just wanted to get a feel for something - if you have tried this or have
an opinion, please reply to the group or individually to
ceprn@hotmail.com......

I am using sqr [no, really ;-)] to do dataloads from a legacy system
(via flatfile) into a PSoft database. For this example, I will be
importing about 100k records, validating them and inserting them into
the database if they pass validation. I have a client-defined table
which contains a bunch of stuff and I need to get 6 columns returned for
each record. There is no index on the table (it contains about 5300
records), and an index would not be very helpful in any case. So, I
could potentially perform 100km full table scans. This program takes
too long to run.

What I am thinking I would do, to increase performance, is create 6
lookup tables and handle the processing internally. Or I guess I could
create 1 lookup table and concatenate the 6 columns into the return
value and process that, but that sounds too much like work, and I like
to keep things simple if at all possible.

What are your thoughts about this in regards to the pros and cons of
this idea as to how it might impact performance??

thanks in advance,

clark
