Alas, this will not work if you want users to be able to "enter" past that
input for a predetermined default.  If you use the "status=" option it
will allow blanks but again not verify a good date.  If you don't care
about defaulting the date input, type=date works great and will display
nice error messages when it is not a proper date/format and re-prompt.
