Your subject line answers your own question.  Use the show command to set
up the menu options, then use the input command only for the prompt:
  show clear-screen
       (3,5) '1. Option 1'
       (4,5) '2. Option 2'
       (5,5) yadda yadda yaddda
       ....
       (9,5)
  input $menu_choice 'Please select option (1-x)' ...
