Large ":occurs" in a create array

Hello All,
Has anyone used very large values in a create-array command. I am
thinking about trying to use something like:
create-array
name=select_cache
size=500
field=num_rows:number
field=field1:char:50000
field=field2:char:50000
field=field3:char:50000
.. . .
field=field20:char:50000
SQR doesn't try to allocate 20 X 500 X 50000 = 500 million bytes of
memory does it? And that doesn't even count the size of the data.
This array will be pretty sparce. Probably only 5-6 of
the 500 records will get above 1000 occurances.
Am I crazy to try it? Has anyone else tried something similar?
This will be running on a pretty hefty Sun box against Oracle.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Eric
