Vicki,
My guess is that the printer doesn't understand what code 174 is. I would
look at the printer and see what symbol set it is using (Roman 8, pc 8,
etc.). Then see if that symbol set includes the circled R. If it does,
use that number, if not, you can change the printer symbol set at run time
or manualy.
