The biggest advantage to using SQR's RENAME is that it is platform
independent.  We run on both UNIX and NT and by using RENAME we do not
have to code for both (or either:)

we can do insulting too....but for an extra fee....
 
and rename() is the better one to use.  All processing done in the
program itself is quicker than going out to the OS...but I doubt you'd
find either noticeably slow.

Man, do I love this list - I got three helpful explanations of two good
solutions, and no one insulted me for asking a question with such
obvious (once you know them) answers.  Now I just have to choose between
call system and rename. :-) Thanks, all!
