You could also try this:

let #status = delete($filename)
if #status = 0
   ! It worked
else
   ! #status contains an error code from the operating system
end-if

The following code works for us...

 let $Comspec = getenv('COMSPEC')
 let $Host_Call = $Comspec || ' /C del/q filename.txt'

call system using $Host_Call #Call_Status
 if #Call_Status = 0
   show 'File Deletion Successful'
 else
   show 'File Deletion NOT SUCCESSFUL'
   show '#Call_Status: ' #Call_Status
   stop
 end-if
