Indeed, we do have a tool that helps with profiling.  The "profile"
feature of our "sqrsh" tool (http://www.ontko.com/sqr/sqrsh.html)
reads and SQR program and produces a similar program that has a
statements inserted into it that count the number of times each 
code block is executed, and then displays a summary after the 
program is complete.  This is a free utility, published under the 
Gnu General Public License.
