RE: [sqr-users] oracle and peoplesoft
I wonder how this will affect people's behavior in the short run. Will the
version 9 developers within Peoplesoft be able to concentrate on their work?
Will Peoplesoft management? Will existing and prospective customers
reconsider their choice of ERP? Will J.D. Edwards withdraw from their
merger? Is it possible that Oracle's bid isn't sincere; that it's just
meant to disrupt the ERP market?
How will Peoplesoft stockholders react? Will today's run-up in the stock
price nullify Oracle's bid or will Oracle go higher? Will there be other
bidders? Will Peoplesoft's customers buy the company to keep it
independent? (Just a fantasy.) Or will the stock settle back to $16?
If Oracle does buy Peoplesoft, what technology will they keep, what will
they discard? App Engine might be replaced by PL/SQL, but I don't think SQR
could be. What do Oracle ERP customers use for batch processes?
Peoplesoft's ambivalent and ambiguous policy on SQR seems more personality
based than rigorously reasoned. App Engine has the smallest code base and
tool support of all the existing tools, but it would be sad to lose some of
its unique and ingenious features.

Peoplesoft is pushing Application Engine as its 'scripting interface' to the
version 8 web product. Since their break with Brio a year or so ago, PS has
offered a proprietary version of SQR. I have the feeling that SQR is
diminishing in importance in the eyes of the PS development staff but Ap
Engine is crude, difficult to use and not very well documented (an immature
product). I don't see how it can offer real competition to SQR for anyone
who has a choice at this point. Who knows how Oracle will come down on this
if at all. The announcement said they would not be selling PS products so
the nature of the (proposed) relationship is unclear to me at this time.
What kinds of control is Oracle likely to assert and how might they do it?
As a major stockholder they can influence the selection of officers and
board members but beyond that...?

Hello Ray,
I am just wondering how Peoplesoft is going to react- just on monday they
have acquired JD Edwards.
Do anyone of you know what is the reaction from Peoplesoft side?

SQR-USERS,
Oracle has today announced it's cash offer to purchase Peoplsoft.
http://www.oracle.com/corporate/investor_relations/FINALpsft.pdf
I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts about how this might
affect SQR (in the long run) if the deal is consumated.
I suspect that existing PS customers will continue to be supported
for quite a long time and that SQR will continue to be part of
the supported software platform.
Oracle may try to push PS customers toward the Oracle database
and development tools, over time, but I suspect they're mostly
interested in the cash flow.
Does anyone know whether they provided a nice bridge for users
from DEC/RDB to Oracle back when they acquired that technology?
Of course, if they bought PS because they wanted to have access
to the SQR code to replace Oracle Reports, they probably could have
bought Brio for less. ;-)
