Most of the problems you'll run in to involved moving up from v3; v3 to
v4 was a bigger change than v4 to v6 (in general).  

There was a discussion of v3 to v4 on the list back when v4 was
released;  search for "upward campatibility" on

to see what was mentioned then.  (I think the best summary of the

Also, there are a few bugs in v6.0 and v6.1, so I'd recommend jumping
straight to v6.2 if you can.
