Mai,
A very helpful resource to me was Peoplesoft HRMS Reporting  by Adam Bromwich
It explained effective dating, with several SQL examples, and explained the 
core tables in Peoplesoft's
HR system.
We also use SQR in PeopleSoft and Other Applications by Galina and Vlad Landres
