Hey Andrew,
They are similar in that each typically require some special processing
(using escape codes) to print correctly.  The MICR (magnetic ink character
recognition) line is the line of computer numbers on the bottom of the
check that includes the bank routing number and the account number, and
sometimes a check number.  The MICR line must use a special font and must
confirm to tight specifications as to where the numbers print on the
check.  The ink used to print the MICR line must be a special magnetic
ink.

Most printers that print checks will use the magnetic ink will print not
only the MICR line using that magnetic ink, but the entire check page. The
signature does not have to be printed using magnetic ink, but it is okay
if it is.  I haven't seen a printer that contains both magnetic toner and
regular toner.  It is just more convenient to print the entire check using
magnetic ink.

Thank you for the reply, what form of signature was this for?  After doing
countless hours of research, I have a question that someone with a little
more experience might be able to answer.  When ever I search for signature
help or simm chip help, I get information about MICR as well.  Are these
two synonymous with each other? Does the Signature and MICR both utilize
special ink or is it only the MICR?
