Re: SQR vs Application Engine

Chris,

Thank you for clearing up some information relating to App-Engine in version
(8.0). My criticism was based solely on app-engine in version (7.5) which in
my opinion is confusing and non intuitive in comparison to SQR. Let's hope
that Peoplesoft can better integrate and evolve it's reporting and data
manipulation tools into robust products, something it has been weak on
from the beginning...

Paul, I have to disagree with you assertion that App Engine is a
nightmare. It is not capable of generating SQR quality reports as you
say, but it is a very handy tool for processing data. A few benefits of
App Engine (in 8.0) over SQR that pop into my head right away are:

- Code re-use through component interfaces, in some cases allowing you to
do things in hours that could literally takes weeks to do with SQR

- Integrated access to the record structures and PeopleCode, allowing for
faster development, easier upgrades and automatic data validation (using
meta-sql is sooo much easier than building huge SQL/DML statements that
need to be updated every time the table changes)

- AEs are part of the standard PeopleSoft change control and upgrade
process, making administration a snap

All in all, App Engine may not be suitable for every purpose, but for a
lot of things it really is a better tool (in a PeopleSoft environment)
than SQR. Its definitely worth playing with it a bit or getting some
training in.
