Re: Cannot run sqr's or COBOL SQL's on client
Allen,
Maybe, I just know that we have some machines using the oracle
8.1.7 client and just editing the tnsnames.ora file didn't work. We did
use the configuration assistant and it did. We could be on a different
version of the client though.

Hi Doug - I don't think that is it. The boxes on campus all get a
standard
Oracle installation and all users point to a common tnsnames.ora file.
Some
users point the the Oracle installed on the fileshare, some point to it
as
installed on their c: drive. Usually the only thing that needs to be
modified is:
(1) Where the connectivity drivers come from in the config manager
(DBBIN).
(2) Where they pick up tnsnames.ora.

You might want to log on to one of those machines and use the Net
Configuration Assistant to set up the Oracle connection. With some
versions of the Oracle client, the tnsnames.ora file isn't used, or
doesn't work. Just try one box and see if that works.

On our campus we have a handful of Win NT boxes that cannot run sqr's or
COBOL SQL's in client-mode. They can run on server without problems, but
on
the client they get the following error in the log file:
(SQR 5528) ORACLE ORLON error -12154 in cursor 0
ORA-12154: TNS:COULD NOT RESOLVE SERVICE NAME
(SQR 4701) Cannot logon to database
Everyone is using the same TNSnames.ORA file.
Using:
sqr 4.3.4
PeopleSoft Financials 7.5
Oracle 8i
