Hey Elvis,
Thanks for the tip.
For me, it turned out to be sort of a hardware issue. The printer
wasn't setup right. Both of its trays were set to legal size.
Consequently, the sqr would first try to print a legal cover sheet
to the letter tray. This would always hold up the printer,
requiring manual switching of the print job on the printer.
(is there a way to have an sqr tell a printer NOT to print
a cover sheet??)
After I reconfigured one of the trays to letter size, the sqr
would seamlessly spit the cover sheet out from the letter
tray, and then the report (check) from the legal tray.
(I ended up simply leaving in the command to choose
legal size, regardless of tray. Like I hoped, the printer
is smart enough to choose which tray based on this
single command.):
ENCODE '<27>&l3A' INTO $legal_code
print-direct printer=hp $legal_code
Hopefully, I won't run into this problem again when
the other locations start running the print
program. They all use different kinds of printers.
(otherwise, life would simply be too easy)
I'm pretty sure the esc sequences are being read in,
regardless of the order I send them to the printer.
I think the only way to reset the printer is to explicitly
tell it to reset.
For the printers I'm working with, this command would
be something like <27>E.

Andrew,
When encoding several PCL commands always make them as one contiguous
command because everytime it encounter <27> that means to reset
the command and you lose the previous command. Ex...
encode '<27>&l0L<27>&l5H<27>&l3A' into $Printer-Init
Your micr command works okay because I believed it was the last
command before the next page(or record).
Hope this helps.
