I think building a companion (either FIELD or TABLE) is the only way to go
as the SORT logic is not typical.

I would build a translation for every character into a two character field.
My rules would be...
Alpha values begin with 00 and increment by one to 25 (a through z)
Number values begin with 26 and increment by one to 35 (0 through 9)

so...
1     >>  27
100   >>  27 26 26
197   >>  27 35 33
198   >>  27 35 34
199   >>  27 35 35
1SL   >>  27 18 12
1SM   >>  27 18 12
1UP   >>  27 20 16
1000  >>  27 26 26 26

The companion would require population at the original insertion.
