One of the "Resolved Customer Reported Issues" in the relnotes is for
version 4.1 defect #3043
"SQR no longer aborts processing when attempting to perform a LET EDIT()
function against a date column when the EXPRESSIONSPACE value is greater
than the default."

My guess would be that editing and "strtodate"ing are causing the same
problems in your version (4.0) which is why it works when you don't
specify an "-M" file.
