Scratch tables

I am attempting to do a really complicated sales and inventory SQR on Informix.
The sales table for a week is ~ 4.5 million rows.  In order to ease the
load on the box , I want to load  "Scratch" tables.  I'm just curious how SQR or
informix deals with this.
Does the table load into memory on the Unix box? Does it manipulate disk storage
somehow?

Are there any practical limitations as to the size?
